Securing Help in Family Transportation (S.H.I.F.T.) Program
Securing Help in Family Transportation (S.H.I.F.T.) is one of LCSA's most unique programs serving low-income families and the only program of its kind in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Going on its 11th year, S.H.I.F.T. stabilizes families by providing them with reliable and affordable car ownership. Many low-income families have difficulty purchasing a car in the open market, due to unethical dealerships overcharging purchase prices and misleading buyers to believe expensive repairs have been completed before they purchase. The truth often reveals predatory practices of charging as much as 25% interest on loans and car repair bills that families cannot afford on a tight budget. Our program works to the benefit of these fragile families by helping them save money and feel confident they are making a smart purchase.
Each year LCSA purchases a fleet of used cars and establishes a two-year contract with prospective clients. During the two years, a maintenance warranty is included, for which LCSA covers all costs associated with keeping the car in top running condition. This important feature of the program benefits our families considerably, as they do not pay out of pocket costs for sizable repair bills. After the client has paid off the contract, they own the vehicle outright and assume responsibility for the maintenance. By the completion of this program, each family has increased their access to gainful job opportunities and extracurricular activities for their children; opportunities they would not have had if it were not for S.H.I.F.T.
To apply for the S.H.I.F.T. program, please fax the complete application to LCSA. The application download can be found HERE. An informational flyer can be found HERE.
During the 2008 - 2009 fiscal year, 20 families were added into the program, and since its inception, over 220 families have received a S.H.I.F.T vehicle.
