Success Stories
Established over 20 years ago, LCSA’s Transitional Housing program provides homeless families with safe, affordable housing and comprehensive case management, enabling them to attain self-sufficiency and end the crisis associated with homelessness. In the particular case of Kimberly Pierce, LCSA provided the support necessary to allow a working mother to regain her hope and determination.
Her story begins in 2004. A lifestyle suffocating in crime and drug abuse left her family homeless. Their dire situation led Kimberly to make an ennobling decision the primacy of sobriety. This first step allowed her to refocus her energy on the most important thing of all, her family. After a brief period at a shelter, Kimberly knew she was ready to make the changes necessary to advance their lives. She was accepted into LCSA’s Transitional Housing program, which, as Kimberly explained, “would help save their lives.” Employed at time of entry, Kimberly was able to complete her CNA license and enroll into South Mountain Community College. Case management activities focused on budgeting and saving money. With those savings, Kimberly was able to complete probation by paying off fines. Kimberly expressed how “LCSA gave her a chance to change her life for the better” because she “still exercises the same principles that were taught to her during the program.”
During the year-long program, LCSA case management activities also focused on the development of her children’s education. Our Children’s Case Manager ensured that each child would not to fall behind during their transition to stability. Kimberly’s two oldest were able to graduate high school and are now defying stereotypical expectations by attending college. The remaining are now successfully attending high school or middle school. Kimberly expressed how LCSA Children’s Case Manager “made her feel so valued,” and “taught me parenting skills in order to regain respect in the household.”
It has been 6 years since Kimberly was accepted into LCSA’s transitional housing program. She is currently earning her Bachelors in Psychology at Ottawa College and demonstrates her appreciation for the supportive services she received by giving back in her community. Her future plans include creating a group home for disabled and homeless individuals in the City of Coolidge and making sure each of her children attend college. LCSA recognizes Kimberly as an exemplary former client, who took our transitional housing program seriously, enabling herself to become self-sufficient and financially stable. We applaud her determination and strength and wish her all the best.
